James H. Oatley

Tupelo - James Henry Oatley, 80, died Monday, December 29, 2008, at the Renal Care Unit and Dialysis Center after a lengthy illness. He was born January 20, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri to Claude and Gertrude E. Keller Oatley.

He joined the United States Navy in 1943 at the age of sixteen. He enlisted in the Marines in 1947 and the Army in 1948 and would continue his military service until 1952. He was a World War II and Korean Conflict Veteran. He was awarded multiple awards and citations including the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Distinguished Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, Victory Medal, and the Purple Heart. After his military career, he lived in Beckemeyer and Carlyle, Illinois before moving to St. Louis, Missouri. While living in Illinios, he was a member of the American Legion in Carlyle and served on the Drill Team of the American Legion in Beckemeyer. He retired August 1, 1987, after 40 years with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. In 1998, he moved to Tupelo to be near his family. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, watching old war movies and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church with Father Tom Lalor officiating. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Corinth National Cemetery with military honors. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marlene Oatley; three daughters, Marsha Luebbers and husband, Michael, of Breese, Illinois, Connie Howard and husband, Henry May, of Mooreville and Marla Puckett and husband, Jeff, of Brandon; two brother-in-laws, Roy Woelbling of St. Peters, Missouri and Charles Schuchmann of Carlyle, Illinios; five grandchildren, Michelle Essenpris and husband, Bart, Melissa Lampe and husband, Travis, Matthew Luebbers and wife, Jessi and Misty Luebbers all of Breese, Illinios and Paige Valequez of Mountain View, Arkansas and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents

Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A Vigil Service with Rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues.
