James Robert Kilgore, III

Tupelo – James Robert Kilgore, III passed away November 27, 2015, at North Mississippi Medical Center. Born October 6, 1926, in Etta, Mississippi, he was the son of Bessie and James Robert Kilgore, II. After graduating from University High School in Oxford, Mississippi, James attended Mississippi College for two years before joining the U.S. Navy, where he participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. He was stationed in Norman, Oklahoma during World War II, and married Theresa Hancock of Tupelo on March 16, 1949.

James had a distinguished business career. James and his brother-in-law, L. D. Hancock, were partners in numerous fabric stores in Mississippi and Louisiana. James and Theresa lived in Jackson about 30 years, where they were active members of Broadmoor Baptist Church. After moving to Tupelo, the brothers-in-law joined with Bill Deas to establish Hancock Furniture in Tupelo. While in Tupelo, James and Theresa were active members of Harrisburg Baptist Church. James was a devoted family man who loved to hunt and be in the woods.

Visitation will be Monday, November 30, 2015 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors, 535 West Jefferson Street, Tupelo. Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Langerfield and Brother Chuck Fowler officiating. Burial will be at the Philadelphia Baptist Church cemetery in Etta, Mississippi.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Theresa Hancock Kilgore; his children, James Robert Kilgore, IV (Linda), Susan Kilgore Ingram (Richard); his four grandchildren, Maria Kilgore, Jamie Wozniak (Nick), Tyler Ingram, and Austin Ingram; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Odessa Clayton and many nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia Busby and brother, Ben Kilgore, Sr.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Ingram, Austin Ingram, Jack Busby, Ben Kilgore, Jr., Othel Anding, Charles Warren, Brock Pope, and David Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 West Main Street, Tupelo, MS 38801.
