Saltillo - James Wesley "Jim" Gardner, 87, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. He was a resident of the Houston-Palestine community east of Baldwyn. He was a native of Saltillo and the son of Exer Leon Gardner and Maude Garner Gardner. He was a Presbyterian. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving more than 30 years and retiring as an E-7 chief. He served from March 4, 1941, to Nov. 1, 1974. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retiring, he spent about 30 years in the Professional Golf Association and was the assistant golf pro at the Tupelo Country Club for 25 years.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues. The Rev. Ronnie Goodwin will officiate, and the Rev. Lee Gardner will assist. Burial with military honors will be at Springhill Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Mary Frances Gardner of the Houston-Palestine community; one daughter, Jacqueline Lowe and husband, Daniel, of Bremerton, Wash.; one son, Steve Gardner of Bremerton, Wash.; two stepsons, Malcolm McMullan and wife, Inita, of Saltillo, and George McMullan and wife, Judy, of Baldwyn; one sister, Kathryn Sherfey and husband, Glenn, of Shannon; one brother, O.H. "Bunch" Gardner and wife, Martha, of Shannon; three grandchildren, Jennifer Chenoweph, Rachel Marie Lowe and Micheal Gardner; one great-grandchild, Daniel Peden; four stepgrandchildren, Leann McMullan, Lauren McMullan, John McMullan and Maggie McMullen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, James Eugene Gardner.

Pallbearers will be Rud Robison M.D., Jim Ross, Bud Gardner, Al Sherfey, Tony Campbell and Roger Campbell.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to service time Sunday.
