Tupelo - JESSIE D. YOUNG, JR., 76, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. A native of Mantachie, he was born January 31, 1931, to the late Jessie D. and Pauline Robbins Young. He was a 1950 graduate of Belden High School and attended Itawamba Junior College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during the Korean Conflict in the Philippines. He married Janice McDonald Young Dec. 7, 1958. He worked in sales for Sherwin Williams in Tupelo and Memphis and later worked for Ace Hardware. He returned to Tupelo in 1990, working several more years in the hardware business, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, crappie fishing and camping with his brothers. He was an active member of Belden United Methodist Church where he served as a chairman of the financial board and on numerous committees.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Danny Wilburn, Rev. Chris Young and Rev. Paul Young officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Janice McDonald Young of Tupelo; one son, Kevin Young of New York, NY; two sisters, Ann Rodgers Sterling and husband, Bill, of Conway, Ark. and Carolyn Davidson and husband, Jesse, of Hatley; two brothers, Robin Young and wife, Madelyn, of Hot Springs Village, Ark. and Rev. Paul Young and wife, Laura, of Starkville; a brother-in-law, W.T. Summers of Tupelo; and a sister-in-law, Allene Young of Saltillo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Joyce Comer and Jean Summers; and one brother, Joe Young.
Pallbearers will be Joe Price Young, Tony Young, David Summers, Walt Summers, Mike Comer, Doug Comer, Steve Young, Marty Young, Paul Young, Jr., Brian Green-Young and Lee Davidson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Alvin Vinson, Wayne Hughes, W.L. Johnston, James Davis, Kenneth Smith, and Gary Smith.
