J Stephens

December 30, 1936 — September 17, 2009

Tupelo - James Thomas J.T. Stephens, 72, died Thursday, September 17, 2009, at his residence after a brief illness. A Lee County native and lifelong resident, he was born December 30, 1936, to Allen and Jewell Mae Short Stephens. A 1955 graduate of Mooreville High School, he then attended Itawamba Community College. He married his wife, Elizabeth, August 14, 1965, and they made their home in the Eggville Community the past 43 years. He served in the Mississippi Army National Guard for ten years, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was a terminal manager for Shumpert and Dean Truck Lines for 20 years. From 1980 until the present, he farmed and owned a dump truck. He enjoyed raising cattle and working his land, meeting people as he worked. He also enjoyed watching football, basketball and baseball, and playing cards and dominoes. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Tupelo Free Will Baptist Church.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Tupelo Free Will Baptist Church with Bro. Terry Pierce officiating. Bro. Leon Willis will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Eggville Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth Robison Stephens of Tupelo; his daughter, Amanda Gail Dean (Michael) of Kosciusko; his son, Charles Allen Stephens (Amanda) of Tupelo; two foster sons, Joey Carter of Tuscaloosa, Ala. and Michael Dutcher (Stephanie) of Mooreville; his sister, Dottie Hale of Tupelo; six grandchildren, Lillian and Matthew Dean of Kosciusko, Brandon and Jordan Dutcher of Mooreville, Madalyn and Allen Stephens of Tupelo,and a step-granddaughter, Melissa Latham of Simms, Tex..

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Charles Allen Stephens.

Pallbearers will be Dewayne Clayton, Ken Robison, Nathaniel Causey, Andy Baldwyn, Stephen Dillard, Josh Stanford, and Michael Dean.

Scotty Dillard and Tommy Raines will serve as honorary pallbearer.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The body will lie in state 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church
