Tupelo - IRENE GURLEY ALLEN, 83, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at her residence after a sudden illness. A Carroll County, Tenn. native, she was born September 15, 1924 to the late Jesse and Floy Meals Gurley. After graduating from high school, she married Jim Allen. They resided in DeSoto County Miss. for six years before moving to the Tupelo/Lee County area where they have lived the past 47 years. She was retired after 19 years with Traceway Manor Retirement Community as a beautician. She enjoyed flower gardening, traveling with tour groups and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandson. She attended the United Methodist Church.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Tim Green officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Cockrum Methodist Church Cemetery in DeSoto County.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Jim Allen of Tupelo; one daughter, Nancy Bruce and husband, Johnny, of Saltillo; one son, Ron Allen of Dallas, Tex.; one brother, William Gurley and wife, Margaret, of Mason, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Amy Hogan and husband, Chris, of Charleston, S.C. and Katie Stuart and husband, Drew, of Montgomery, Ala.; one great-grandson, Heath Hogan.
Pallbearers will be Chris Hogan, Drew Stuart, Andy Stuart, Billy Allen, Elroy Hudson, Billy Hudson, Lundy Robinson and David Haraway.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
