Tupelo- Pershing Hoyt Sheffield, 83, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Plantersville, September 26, 1935, to Lurton Hoyt and Elizabeth Lucille Foster Sheffield. He was a graduate of Mooreville High School and attended Itawamba Junior College. Hoyt worked in the car business for 60 years in Tupelo. In 1955, he formed Tupelo Auto Sales, Ltd with his brother George. In 1973, he owned the second largest Subaru dealership in the United States. In 1980, he became a dealership owner for Chrysler Dodge Jeep which he maintained until 2015. He was an avid NASCAR and football fan. He was a long-time faithful member of St. James Catholic Church where he was an active member of Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Bobbie Sheffield; two daughters, Sherry Sheffield Davis and Lisa Wallace and her husband, Freddy; three sons, Judge John Hoyt Sheffield and his wife, Lisa, Andy Sheffield and Ted Sheffield and his wife, Sharon; six grandchildren, Jonathan Davis, Benjamin Davis, Sarah Sheffield Monts, Kendal Wallace, Max Sheffield and Elizabeth Sheffield; three great-grandchildren, Seth Sheffield, Emma Kate Davis and Elektra Monts; three brothers, George Sheffield and his wife, Pat, James Sheffield and Robert Sheffield and his wife, Francine; and one aunt, Rena McVay.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lurton and Elizabeth Sheffield; one brother, John Kenneth Sheffield; and one grandson, Sgt. Joshua Sheffield who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. and conclude with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2018 at W.E. Pegues, Tupelo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in memory of Hoyt on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at
1 p.m. at St James Catholic Church with Father Tim Murphy presiding. Burial will be in Plantersville Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Davis, Benjamin Davis, James Mark Sheffield, Jerome Sheffield, Cameron Monts and Jason McVay.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rudy Dossett, Felice Carrozza, Clevon Smith,Guy Harris, Larry McKay, Freddie Wallace, Judge Pat Carr, Ed Randall, Kelly Alexander, and former employees of Tupelo Auto Sales.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in memory of Mr. Sheffield be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 W. Main St Tupelo, MS 38801.
