Henry Barger

Memphis - HENRY OWEN BARGER, 88, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at Baptist Hospital East in Memphis, Tenn. after a brief illness. A native of Sontag, Miss., he was born October 4, 1918 to the late Henry Carlton and Lillian Owen Barger. As a youth, he attended Heucks Retreat School in rural Lincoln County, Mississippi and later enjoyed serving on the reunion committee for many years. He attended Copiah-Lincoln High School and Junior College before graduating from Mississippi State College in 1941 with a bachelors degree in agricultural economics.

Upon his graduation, he entered the U.S. Army in 1941, and after receiving his commission, was assigned command of the U.S. Army Small Tug Gateville (ST715) in Southampton, England as part of the 340th Harbor Craft Company of the 14th Major Port in the European Theater of Operations from 1944 to 1946. He continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserve until retirement in 1974 at the rank of Major.

After leaving active military service, he began a career in fertilizer sales that included 12 years with Virginia Carolina Chemical Corporation in Memphis, Tennessee and Greensboro, North Carolina and 18 years with Mississippi Chemical Corporation in Tupelo where he retired in 1978.

In retirement he was very interested in history and genealogy and gained much enjoyment from researching and documenting various family lines. He was a member of the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society as well as many others.

He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Tupelo where he served on the Board of Trustees, and was an active member of the Chapman Mens Bible Class. In addition, he served on the Troop Committee of Boy Scout Troop 12.

Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Tupelo Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Milton Winter and Rev. Ed Temple officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy Curlin Barger as well as their three children, Diana Barger Moore and husband William F., Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee, Henry Owen Barger, Jr. and wife Jean of Houston, Texas, David Neil Barger and wife Lilian of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren William III and Allen Ryves Moore, Stephanie Barger, Jennifer Barger Richburg and husband Tim, Aaron and Alan Barger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Glenn Monroe Barger; and a sister, Esther Johnson.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
