HELENA SHURDEN Blue Mountain - Helena Shurden, 68, died Friday, October 18, 2013, at her residence near Blue Mountain after a lengthy illness. A Columbus, Ohio native, she was born May 5, 1945, to William Printice and Helen Corrine Averill. She was raised in Fairfax,,Virginia and had lived a number of years in Tupelo where she served as a paralegal for several area attorneys. From 1984 to 2000 she was actively involved with a number of Civil War reenactments and also ran a sutlery (in camp store) where she sold wares of the period for numerous reenactments. Among the many battle reenactments she participated in were Shiloh, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg and Murfreesboro. Of particular interest, she worked as an extra in the ABC Civil War miniseries North & South. Helena was an avid Ole Miss Fan and along with most good Ole Miss Fans, maintained a long lasting disdain for LSU. A memorial service honoring her life will be 6 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2013, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Wayne Cobb officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley at a later date. Survivors include two sons, Nathan Lowe of Blue Mountain and Andrew Shurden (Lea) of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and one grandson, Turner Lewis Shurden of the home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Col. William Printice and Helen Corrine Wagner Averill and one brother, William "Bill" Averill. Visitation will be 4 - 6 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2013, at W.
