DR. HARVEY M. CAMPBELL

Tupelo - Harvey Morrow Campbell, DDS, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. A Gowensville, South Carolina native, he was born May 30, 1916, to the late Columbus Hanon and Texanna Magnolia Morrow Campbell. He was a 1933 graduate of Campobello High School in Campobello, South Carolina, and a 1938 graduate of Furman University. Earlier in his life he taught chemistry and biology and was Dean of Men at North Greenville University in South Carolina. He completed his education at the University of Tennessee, where he served as president of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Premedical Fraternity and graduated DDS in 1943. His dental practice in Tupelo spanned 44 years.

Dr. Campbell was a Life Member and Fellow of the Mississippi Dental Association, the Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontists, Past President and Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry.

As a child, he spent years in orthopedic rehabilitation at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, S.C., for a leg injury, which earned his lifelong nickname "Cedarfoot". The time he spent in rehabilitation inspired his commitment to the Shrine organization. He was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Lee County Shrine Club. He was past president of the Tupelo Kiwanis Club and was a recipient of the Legion of Honor 45 year member. He had a lifelong interest in antique cars and was a member of the Mississippi Antique Car Club. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he was Deacon Emeritus, taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class. He was involved in his family Jersey cattle dairy farm and was a member of the Lee County Cattleman's Association. He was an active member of RCDC (Rural Community Development Council).

His wife of 64 years, Dorothy Page Shirley Campbell, preceded him in death Sept. 5, 2003.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lee Memorial Park in Verona. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Bryant Barnes and the Rev. Tim Green officiating. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Janice Coleman and Ann Whitfield and her husband, Morgan, all of Tupelo, Lu Fitzwater and her husband, John, of Lakeland, Fla., and Margie Hollis and her husband, Randy, of Baton Rouge, La.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Hugh (Janet) Campbell of Montezuma, Ga.; one brother-in-law, Leon Shirley of Tupelo; nine grandchildren, Page Coleman Clanton and her husband, Curt Clanton, Lucy Coleman, McIsaac (Mac) Coleman, Tanner Coleman, Morgan Whitfield Jr. and his wife, Gwen, John Whitfield, Katherine Fitzwater, Pete Hollis and Martha Claire Hollis; four great-grandchildren, Coleman Clanton, McKinley Clanton, Morgan Whitfield III and Brendan Whitfield; his special friends, Randy and Sandy Pumphrey, Marilyn Hicks, his many friends at the Rosewood Residence; and his special caregivers, Vearner Copeland, Sharon Dunnaway, Melissa Garrett and Betty Justice.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers, Rev. Carl Campbell, Rev. Claude Campbell and Hugh Campbell.

Pallbearers will be Morgan Whitfield Jr., McIsaac (Mac) Coleman Jr., Tanner Coleman, John Whitfield, Pete Hollis, Curt Clanton, Randy Pumphrey and Howard Crump. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Page Coleman, Lucy Coleman, Martha Claire Hollis and Katherine Fitzwater.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p .m. today at the funeral home.
