Harold Roberts
Tupelo-Harold Roberts, 85, passed away Friday, June 29, 2018 at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born April 28, 1933, in Union County to Joe Wheeler Roberts and Ada Estell Lessel Roberts. After attending New Harmony High School, he worked for a local concrete business. At age 21 he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in Korea. After being honorably discharged, he worked briefly for a paint company in Memphis before being hired as a mechanic for the Ford tractor business in Tupelo. In 1956, Roberts joined the staff of Jimmy Thompson Motors. He married Myzette Wilder on December 22, 1957, at Ecru Baptist Church, and they were married almost 59 years before her death in 2016.He worked many years for George Ruff Buick Olds before opening J&H Garage on North Gloster Street in June 1969 with his brother, John. In 1982 they moved the business to Rankin Boulevard Extended, where it remained until he retired in 2003.Not only a master mechanic, Roberts enjoyed building and restoring antique cars for himself and friends. He was an active member of the Mississippi Antique Car Club for many years and enjoyed touring and showing his 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air and other cars over the years. He was also a longtime member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church. He loved his family and friends, Atlanta Braves baseball, classic cars, fishing and a good steak.
Survivors include two children, Deborah Roberts Pugh and her husband Larry of Tupelo and Todd Roberts of Sardis; two grandchildren, Lauren and Courtney Pugh; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Ecru Cemetery.
His nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
