Graham H. Weant

August 8, 1916 — July 20, 2010

Tupelo - Graham Haywood Weant, 93, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Avonlea Assisted Living after living a wonderful and full life. He was born August 8, 1916 in Salisbury, North Carolina to John Alexander and Annie Elizabeth Shoaf Weant. He studied music at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina and The University of Miami. He was a long-time employee of Owens-Illinois. He moved to Tupelo in 1968 and became a top salesman for Gibson Container until retiring at age 88. He was an inventor and had developed several patents. An avid golfer, he loved all sports and was a longtime member of the Tupelo Country Club. He was a longtime active member of Calvary Baptist Church. He loved to sing and would do solos for his church. A marvelous story teller, he was a true southern gentleman and will be missed by all who knew him.

The celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues in Tupelo, Mississippi with Rev. Steve Hurt officiating. Additional services will be held at Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury, North Carolina. Burial will be in Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Survivors include the love of his life, his wife of 71 years, Hazel Edna Doss Weant of Tupelo; two sons, John A. Weant of Lexington, TN and David A. Weant (Nell) of Germantown, TN; one daughter, Carol E. Weant of Salibury, NC; one sister, Edith Weant Peeler of Salisbury, NC; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren who he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Geneva Weant Peeler; one brother, Howard Weant; one half-sister, Duette Leonard Kincaid.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
