Saltillo - GRACE FAYE BATEY, 85, died Thursday, February 7, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County after an extended illness. She was born May 12, 1922, in Red Bay, Ala., to the late Amos Houston and Katie Bertha James Tubbs. The daughter of a sharecropper, she grew up all over the south, living in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. The past 30 years of her life were spent in Daytona Beach, Fla. until moving to Tupelo to be near her grandchildren. She worked as a nurses' aide and also a caregiver for the elderly. She enjoyed sewing. She loved spending time with her friends and her church, Beville Church of Christ in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Mark Tutor officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include four sisters, Margie Martin of Russelville, Ala., Luverna Allen of Philidelphia, Miss., Lorene Burns and Esther Muse, both of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Nelson Tubbs of Orlando, Fla. and J.D. Tubbs of Middletown, Ohio; five grandchildren, Theresa Sheffield (Mickey) of Peppertown, Cindy Kelly (Terry) of Saltillo, Chris Christian of Peppertown, Todd Batey (Leigh) of Montgomery, Ala., and Angie Batey and fianc, Gary, of Montgomery, Ala.; four great-grandchildren, Michael Kelly, Morgan Kelly, Preston Sheffield, Mark-Alan Sheffield; her daughter-in-law, Peggy Batey of Montgomery, Ala.; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Homer Batey; one daughter, Gloria Gregg; one son, Gwin Batey; one sister, Cleo Flippo, two brothers, Billy Tubbs and Martin Tubbs.
Visitation will be noon until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
