Shannon - Glenn Allen Sherfey, Sr., 86, died Thursday, August 27, 2009, at his residence after an extended illness. A Nettleton native, he was born October 28, 1922 to Robert E. and Annie Lou Straiter Sherfey. He was a member of Shannon First Baptist Church.He was a farmer in the Shannon and Nettleton area.
He served in the 9th Army AirCore during World War II in Europe reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. He was in the Battle of the Buldge and the Invasion of France at Normandy. After his time in the military, he married Mary Kathryn Gardner and moved to Abilene, Texas where he worked in the oil fields of West Texas and in the real estate business before returning to Mississippi. He became involved in farming in the Shannon and Nettleton area and was a civil service employee for Federal Crop Insurance. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed farming the land and watching crops grow and spending time with family and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 2009 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Mark Cayson and Rev. John Box officiating. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Kathryn Sherfey; one son, Al Sherfey (Linda) both of Shannon, one granddaughter, Alana Fowler (Adam); two great grandchildren, Aidan and Arin Fowler, all of Plantersville; three sisters, Alice Judon, Rhudy Fancher (Robert) both of Memphis and Diane Sherfey of Tupelo; one brother, Jake Sherfey (Ocell) of Nettleton; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Nell Sherfey of Tupelo and Frances Gardner of Baldwyn; one brother-in-law, Bunch Gardner (Martha) of Shannon; special caregivers, Linda Thompson, Cindy Morton and Patricia Murphy, several nieces and nephews and Mollie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Burgess, Dorothy Sealy and Nancy Sherfey; one brother, Emmett Sherfey.
Pallbearers will be Mike Filgo, John Ivy, Jack Trice, Bud Gardner, Jerry Griffin, Malcomb McMullan.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Vaughan Hood, Ralph Gillespe, John Priest, Bill Curtis, Raymond Dallas, John Wiygul, Ed Minga and A.T. Hathcote.
