Tupelo - Glen R. Vest, 87, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a short illness. A Walnut Grove, Missouri native, he was born August 27, 1921 to Russell M. and Ruth M. Lowry Vest. Prior to the Japanese bombing at Pearl Harbor, he was based in Reykjanes, Iceland serving on submarine patrol in the United States Navy on the USS Wilson. After the formal declaration of war, he was transferred to the Pacific Theater where he served on the USS Guam. After the war, he attended college in Jacksonville, Florida and then worked as a manager for a bookbinding business in St. Augustine, Florida where he learned the trade and later worked in sales for the same company for a number of years. After moving to Tupelo in the early 1960s, he co-founded a bookbinding business and later started his own bookbinding business, Glen and Evelyn Vest Bookbinding. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a long-time member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church. He was an avid and talented photographer and earlier in his life had enjoyed hunting.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Bert Harper officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn McDonald Vest, of Tupelo; one daughter, Diane Sudduth of Tupelo; one sister, Verlie Reed of Durant, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Tim Sudduth and wife, Allison, of Tupelo, Mickey Sudduth and wife, Jennifer, of Tupelo and Donald Sudduth and wife, Rebecca, of Mooreville; eight great grandchildren, Megan Sudduth, Kaylee Sudduth, Brian Sudduth, Faith Sudduth, Katie Sudduth and Blake Sudduth; a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernon Vest and Leon Vest and one sister, June Rost.
Pallbearers will be Louiedean Ball, Billy Langford, Marvin Hoard, Calvin Smith, Wally Hare and Tommy Carr.
Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009 at the funeral home.
