GERALDINE MAYO (GERRI) CARTER
Huntsville - ALDER GERALDINE MAYO CARTER, 90, died Monday, December 25, 2006, at her residence after an extended illness. A Philadelphia, MS native, she was born June 16, 1916 to the late Claude Leroy and Sara Cornelia Mayo. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Quitman, MS., where she was graduated from High School in 1933. She was married to Thomas Francis Carter, Sr. of Quitman on November 22, l935. They moved to Tupelo, MS in 1946.
Mrs. Carter taught first grade for 31 years, 20 of which were at Joyner Elementary School in Tupelo. She earned a BS degree from Mississippi State University and a Masters from the University of Mississippi.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gama and the Peripatetic Club. As a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church for more than 50 years, she taught Sunday school for many of those years.
In 1995 she moved to Huntsville, AL, where she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev Tim Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include one son, James Mayo Carter and his wife Anna Allen Carter of Huntsville, AL; one sister Mildred Mayo Owen of Memphis; three brothers Hays Mayo of Galveston, TX., James Mayo of McLain VA., and Jeff Mayo and wife Marguerite of Hattisburg.
She was preceded in death by parents,her husband Thomas F. Carter Sr.; one son Thomas F. Carter Jr.; two sisters Lucille Smiderski and Mary Ann Smith.
Pallbearers will be Thomas F. Carter, III, James M. (Jay) Carter Jr., Jonathan Allen Carter, Greg Smith, Jeff Mayo, Jr. and Arthur Sasseville.
Visitation will be Saturday from Noon until service time at the funeral home.
