GEORGE WALSH

Tupelo, Miss - George William Walsh, 72, died Sunday, September 24, 2006, at the Sanctuary Hospice House after a lengthy illness. A native of Ivesdale, Ill., he was born Dec. 14, 1933, the youngest of eight children, to the late John Thomas Walsh, Sr. and Marie Wood Walsh. He was a 1952 graduate of Atwood High School in Atwood Ill. In 1956, he graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he played varsity football. He was a member of the Theta Xi Fraternity, and ROTC, and became a life member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association, and the Varsity "I Association. While at the University, he met his wife, Lee Purnell whom he married July 14, 1956. He served from 1956-1958 in the Army as a First Lieutenant and four years in the Army Reserve. He was with Purnells Pride, Inc. from 1959 to 1985. After the family business was sold in 1985, he joined the City of Tupelo as the Director of Public Works where he continued in various capacities until he retired in September of 2001. After retirement from the city, he started his own handyman business "Let George Do It. He was an active member and elder of First Presbyterian Church in Tupelo. He was a longtime member of the Tupelo Kiwanis Club where he had served on the board of directors and served as president in 1972. He was a volunteer with Tupelo Community Theater and technical director of Tupelo Community Concert Association. He volunteered in various capacities with young people in youth sports, including the THS Touchdown Club, Tupelo Aquatic Club, and Punt, Pass, and Kick. His interests included yard work, woodworking, auto repair, and home maintenance. He was known as an avid Illini football and basketball fan and followed his grandsons soccer and baseball teams.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Tom Groome officiating.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lee Purnell Walsh of Tupelo; one daughter, Julie Walsh Seiler and husband, Jim, of Tupelo; two sons, Mark Walsh and his wife, Betsy Bristow Walsh of Roanoke, Virginia, and Scott Walsh of Tupelo; four grandsons, Taylor and Parker Walsh of Roanoke, and George and Henry Seiler of Tupelo; three sisters, Mary Englum of Paris, Ill, Cecelia Curl of Chrismon, Il, Rita Henneberry of Toulon, Ill.; one brother, Tom Walsh of Decatur, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step-mother, Mildred Ewing Walsh, a sister, Catherine Magsamen, two brothers, John Wood (Jack) Walsh, Raphael (Ray) Walsh; and two infant granddaughters, Ashley Elizabeth Walsh, and Mae Walsh Seiler.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Rutherford, Joe Bailey, Hugh Luckett, Jim Threldkeld, Robert Hodges, Jim Bronson, Hank Boerner, James Williams, Frank Riley, Gray Megginson, Dick Hill, Bill Young, Bill Caples, Leighton Pettis, and the Session of First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, and from 1 p.m. until service time Tuesday in McFadden Hall at the Church.
