GENE MANGUM Tupelo - Gene Preston Mangum, 67, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a sudden illness. Born April 26, 1947, in Mize, Mississippi, Gene was the son of Chester and Carrie Amason Mangum. After twenty years, he retired from BancorpSouth and spent the last seven years as a Deputy Sheriff for Lee County Sheriff's Department. He greatly enjoyed working at the Lee County school ball games and sporting events. He loved his family dearly and cherished time spent with them, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church. A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. David Langerfeld and Sheriff Jim H. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Crowell (Brian) of Dallas, Texas; one son, Calvin Mangum (Camille) of Tupelo; five grandchildren, Bryce Crowell and Madalyn Crowell both of Dallas, Texas and Jake Mangum, Macie Mangum and Emmalee Mangum all of Tupelo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Mangum and his parents. The Honor Guard of the Lee County Sheriff's Department will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be his fellow officers from the Lee County Sheriff's Department, Tupelo Police Department, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in his honor to Allen Chapel United Methodist Church.
