Saltillo - Gene Alexander, 72, died Thursday, December 3, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born September 18, 1937 to Thomas Bonner and Viola Turner Alexander. He was a life-long resident of Saltillo. For 50 years, he worked as a route salesman for Sunshine Groceries and J J Rogers and Sons Wholesale Groceries. He was co-owner of G & M Rentals, Inc. He was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir. He was devoted to his work and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 2009, at the Saltillo Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Frank Breaux and Dr. Rex Yancey officiating. Burial will be in Fellowship Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Frances Alexander of Saltillo; two daughters, Susan Mathis (Gary) and Michele Denham (Doug) both of Saltillo; two sons, Michael Alexander and his fiance, Sheila of Guntown and Murray Alexander of Saltillo; two step-children, Ray Newcomb and Donna Phillips both of Saltillo; three grandchildren, John Alexander of Oxford, Karen Mathis and Renee Denham both of Saltillo; two step-grandchildren, Dawn and Kent Phillips; one sister, Martha Kingsley of Hawkins, TX, brother-in-law, Quay Stults (Peggy) of Saltillo; two special friends, Maurice Jones and Michelle Burton both of Saltillo.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Sue Alexander who preceded him in death on November 7, 2006; his parents; and a nephew, Mark Kingsley.
Pallbearers will be Howard Holmes, James Cooper, Dinky Crowder, Maurice Jones, Ron Helms, Travis Abney, Jeff Johnson and Keith Williams.
Honorary pallbearers will be his Sunday School Class at Bethany Baptist Church and Neil May.
Visitation will be 5 - 9 p.m. Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Saltillo Funeral Home.
