Garvin Barber

GARVIN BARBER Tupelo - Garvin Mitchell Barber, 87, died Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born September 18, 1925, to Will and Eula Barber. He was formerly employed at Truck Center, Inc. and in his later years, a self-employed roofer. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in World War II and in the Korean War. He was a member of East Heights Baptist Church and in his earlier years served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed water skiing, fishing and golfing until his health failed. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at W.E. Pegues Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry King officiating and Bro. Dennis Kazzire assisting. Private burial will be at Lee Memorial Gardens. Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla King (Jerry) of Starkville and Gerldine Sledge (Elvis) of Clinton; four grandchildren, Mitch King of Jackson, Angie Edge (Kevin) of Senatobia, Haley Sledge of Jackson and Seth Sledge of Clinton; three great-grandchildren, KK, Katch and King Edge of Senatobia; one brother, Marvin Barber of Mooreville; and a special friend and caregiver, Ouida Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Opal Foote, Odelle Nichols and Gladys Mears; one brother, William Clifton Barber, Sr.; and the mother of his children, Elsie Maye Barber. Visitation will be 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, until service time at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Joe Mears, W.C. Barber, Jr., David Cochran, Charles Ray Barber, Elvis Sledge, Mitch King and Kevin Edge. Honorary pallbearers will be Seth Sledge, Dr. Rud Robison, D.A. Miller, Harold Richburg and James and Chris Johnson. A memorial contribution in his memory may be made to Montpelier Baptist Church Building Fund, 17740 Perkins Rd. Cedar Bluff, MS 39741 or to the Sanctuary Hospice House, PO Box 2177, Tupelo, MS 38803.
