FRANCES GREGORY PATTERSON

Tupelo -Frances Gregory Patterson, 90, died Tuesday, October 3, 2006, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. A Saltillo native, she was born August 11, 1916 to the late Archie Lee and Lily Mary Margaret Virginia Dillard Gregory. She did her undergraduate work at Mississippi University for Women and her masters and advanced masters work at the University of Mississippi. She was a teacher in the Tupelo Public School systerm for over 30 years, and established the city's scholars/gifted program, which was recognized by the State Department of Education as being one of the superior programs in the state. She was selected as Star Teacher three times. She was a permanent member of the Mississippi University for Women Alumni Association and twice served as the director of the Advisory Board for the Center for Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. In 1983, she established a scholarship at Vanderbilt University for students in ministry or medicine, the Eudora Welty Scholarship in Creative Writing for Mississippi high school students at the University of Mississippi, and academic scholarships at the University of Mississippi and Mississippi University for Women.

Mrs. Patterson was active in the arts, including memberships in the Fortnightly Musicale of Tupelo, the Tupelo Artist Guild, the Mississippi Institute of Arts and letters, and was a charter member of the Tupelo Symphony. She was the widow of Aubrey Ershell "A.E." Patterson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Graveside Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Lee Memorial Park with a Memorial Service following at 11 a.m. First United Methodist Church. Rev. Andy Ray and Rev. Hershel Wiygul will officiate. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one brother, LeRoy Gregory and wife, Melba, of Memphis; seven cousins, Joe Dillard Bucy of Tupelo, Dot Finger of Ripley and her children, John Finger and Laura Sanchez of Albuquerque, N.M., Charles Johnston and wife, Joyce of Tupelo and their son, Gregory of Dallas, Tex., David Baker of Tupelo, and Kenneth Holditch of New Orleans, La. John Dillard and wife, Lucille, of Greenville, Bill Dillard and wife, Edith, of Louise; special friends, Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Murphey, III, and their children, Cooper, Steven, Margaret and Jean Fairson. Other close friends include Smitty Harris and family, John Dawson and family, Patsy Johnson and Deborah Blaylock.

Pallbearers will be Smitty Harris, Dr. Brett Hildenbrand, Dr. Stephen Murphey, John Nail, Jack Reed, and Jack Reed, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Eugene Murphey, Jim High, Joe Rutherford, and Julian Prince.

Family and friends will be available in the Gathering Room at the church following the memorial serivce.
