Erlene Hall McCaskill, 90, passed from this life into the arms of her Heavenly Father January 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving family at North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness.
Erlene, known as “Nanny” to her family, was born July 2, 1928 in Plantersville, to Turnage and Jessie Mae Matthews Mattox. She graduated from Plantersville High School in 1947. On November 27, 1947 she married Leonard Hall and the couple made their home in Tupelo. Leonard preceded her in death in 1972.
She was a homemaker and later worked at the Lawhon school cafeteria and Tupelo Aluminum Products, retiring in 1990.
On October 2, 1981 Erlene married Edgar McCaskill and they shared many happy years together until his death in 2001.
Erlene was a faithful and active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church for 62 years, and held offices in the United Methodist Women’s group, including president. She also started the J.O.Y (Just Over Youth) club at St. Mark’s and enjoyed many fun outings with them.
A charter member of the East Heights Garden Club, Erlene had a talent for growing flowers and tomatoes. One of her joys was tending her many beautiful plants on her sun porch.
Erlene had an indomitable spirit and was a two-time cancer survivor. She participated for many years in the Camp Bluebird cancer survivors support group. Despite the hardships she endured in life, she lived life with joy and enthusiasm. She was known by family and friends alike for her kind heart, thoughtfulness, and sense of humor. Erlene lived her faith through her love and devotion to family and friends. Christmas was always a special time for the family at Nanny’s house for the way she loved to decorate for the holiday and bake cakes, pies, bread and biscuits for them.
Erlene is survived by her three children and their spouses, Dennis and Lisa Hall of Tupelo; Jan and Bobby Thomas of Tishomingo, MS; and Matt and Denise Hall of Breckenridge, TX. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Krista Davis of Batesville, MS; Kasey Pinson of Tupelo; Summer Neely and husband Clint of Magnolia, TX; Shelley Boswell of Tupelo; Cameron Boswell of Starkville, MS; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her three brothers, John Thomas Mattox, Robert Stanley Mattox, and James Arnold Mattox.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2019 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues, 535 W. Jefferson St., Tupelo, MS. Rev. Danny Dabbs will officiate, assisted by Rev. Cory Collins. Visitation is from 4 until 7 p.m. Sunday at W.E. Pegues, Tupelo.
