Elizabeth 'Sis" Estes

ELIZABETH ESTES Shannon - Elizabeth "Sis" Estes, 87, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. A native of Lee County, she was born December 25, 1926, to Elmer M. and Gara Tate Potts. A graduate of Tupelo High School, she then went on to attend Mississippi State College for Women. March 4, 1947, she married J. K. Estes and began building a lifetime of memories. For many years, she taught Kindergarten at Shannon. After retiring as a kindergarten teacher, she worked as a utility clerk for the Town of Shannon. Sis was a former member of the Shannon Junior Woman's Club, a member of Northeast Mississippi Art Association, a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and worked with the Cub Scouts. For many years, she volunteered as an art teacher at Traceway Retirement Center. She loved reading, oil painting, crafts and genealogy. Her greatest passion was traveling and visited many different countries with her daughter. Sis was a member of Shannon First Baptist Church for over sixty years where she was a Sunbeam and G. A. Leader, taught Sunday school and for twenty-six years taught the Ladies I Class. A Celebration of Life service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Bro. Donald Graham officiating. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include one daughter, Karen Burleson (James) of Shannon; two sons, Ken Estes (Claudia) of Jackson and Joey Estes of Germantown, Tennessee; one sister, Susan Winders of Shannon; seven grandchildren, Jeff Burleson (Jennifer), Mark Burleson (Emily), Jake Estes, Jarrett Estes, Carter Barnett, Ann Fairly Barnett and Tommy Jo Barnett; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew, Hunter, J. D., Kate, Rachel, Lia, and Sam Burleson; cousins, Margie Tyler of Murphreesboro, Tennessee and Wayne Fairchild (Betty) of Shreveport, Louisiana; and several nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J. K. Estes in 2007; and one granddaughter, Angelia Burleson. Pallbearers will be Jeff Burleson, Mark Burleson, Jake Estes, Jarrett Estes, Carter, Barnett, Andrew Burleson, Kevin Lothrop, Hunter Burleson, and J. D. Burleson. Honorary pallbearers will be John Priest, Bill Curtis, Larry Johnson and Shorty Collins. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, November 17, 2014 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Shannon First Baptist Church, Prayer Garden, 141 Shannon Ave. Shannon, MS 38868.
