Edwin Clyde “Ed” Neelly III

Tupelo- Edwin Clyde "Ed" Neelly, III, died on February 21, 2018. He was born in Greenwood, Mississippi, on October 2, 1939 to Edwin Clyde Neelly, Jr. and Margaret Crenshaw Neelly.

He grew up in Grenada where his father was a merchant. Ed graduated from John Randle High School. He received his bachelors degree from the University of Mississippi, his graduate degree from Louisiana State University, and was a graduate of Harvard School for Senior Bank Executives.

He served for eight years in the Mississippi Air National Guard, the United States Air Force Reserve and was active duty in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Ed's forbearers served in nearly every war in which the United States participated: The Indian War under George Washington, The American Revolution, The War of 1812, The Mexican War, The War of Northern Aggression, The Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Ed served as President of the William Gray Chapter of the Sons of The American Revolution.

Ed was engaged in the commercial banking business for 44 years. He began his career as a management trainee with the Grenada Banking System. He progressed to office of the President. He and his family came to Tupelo in 1980 where he was elected President and CEO of the People's Bank and Trust Company. Retiring for 30 days, he was then elected President of The First American National Bank.

Ed had always been keenly interested in his adopted hometown of Tupelo. He served as councilman-at-large and was elected to the office of Mayor. He served as chairman of the Community Development Foundation and of United Way, was a member of the Salvation Army Board and the 4-H Advisory Board and was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, an office that he served for eight years.

Ed was a man of great faith in his creator and his Lord, Jesus Christ. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tupelo and was an ordained Elder.

He is survived by the love of his life, Claudia; one son, Ed Neelly, IV, and his wife, Leigh Carol; one daughter, Perry; two brothers, Dick and Mike; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Tucker McGowan Neelly.

Visitation will be 4 until 8 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2018 at W.E. Pegues, Tupelo.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018 at his home church, First Presbyterian Church., Tupelo. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. on the Neelly family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery in Grenada. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Ed Neelly, IV, Mark Burleson,  Mike Webb, Tom Billups, Don Riley and Donald Vaughn.

Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Hyde, Jim Brown, Bill Murphree, Ernie Joyner, Harold White and anyone Ed Neelly, IV, forgot.
