TATER HILLS - Durward "D.E" Oswalt, 96, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at the Sanctuary Hospice House after a brief stay. A Lee County native and a lifelong resident of the Tater Hills community, he was born Oct. 16, 1912, to John Henry Jessie Jackson Oswalt and Mary Ellis Oswalt. He was able to live in his home until he moved to the Sanctuary Hospice House for one day. He was a farmer for 40 years and then worked over 30 years as a carpenter for Hancock Fabric Stores. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Mississippi Free and Accepted Masons, Nettleton Lodge No. 451, and receiving his 50 years of continuous service pin as a Master Mason in good standing. He was a lifetime member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Mississippi Local Union No. 303. He was a master gardener, known for his prize-winning tomatoes. He loved his two dogs, Cricket and Lady. He was a member and deacon of New Hope Baptist Church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Lowell Johnson officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery.

Survivors include three children, Joan Young (Billy), Kenneth E. Oswalt (Barbara) and Mary Jane Graham (Dan); 12 grandchildren, Belinda Wyrick, Eric Young (Kathy), Lance Young (Beth), Vicki Westmoreland, Dereck Young (Connie), Johnnie Sanders (Brent), Mike Oswalt (Christy), Mark Oswalt (Leah), Jim Oswalt (Kim), Stephanie Bowman (Barry), Clay Graham (Grace) and Amy Bonamy (James); a son-in-law, Fred Young; 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Pearl Agnes Davis Oswalt; and his daughter, Dorothy Jean Young.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Clay Graham, Jim Oswalt, Mike Oswalt, Eric Young, Lance Young, Dereck Young and Mark Oswalt.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Knight, Marcus Oswalt Jr. and Andy Gregory.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
