DURARD BARNES Mantachie - Durard Barnes, 85, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013, at The Meadows in Fulton. He was born January 4, 1928, in Vina, Alabama, to James Ira and Bonner McCulloug Barnes. A high school graduate of Itawamba Agricultural High school he was a recipient of the Balford Award. He attended Ole Miss and then received his Masters Degree in accounting from the University of Memphis. A long time resident of Verona, he spent the last seven years in Mantachie with his daughter. In his early life, he taught at Hopewell Elementary School and later retired from J.J. Rogers & Sons as a Co-Accountant. A musician and song writer, he enjoyed the outdoors, particularly camping and fishing. He loved his family and cherished time spent with them. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Verona. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Buddy Smith officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Survivors include one daughter, Judy Ellis (Louis) of Mantachie; one grandchild, Peter Gregory (Tammy) of Southaven; two great-grandchildren, Blake and Dolton Gregory of Southaven. He was preceded in death by two late wives, Berma Mask Barnes and Mary Nettles Barnes; his parents; one brother, Howard Barnes. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to service time Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to a chairty of your choice in his honor.
