DOUG SMITH
Plantersville - Doug Smith, 74, died Sunday, April 9, 2017, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born July 14, 1942, in the Chesterville Community to Louis and Zadie McKissack Smith. During his childhood his family moved to East Tupelo where he attended Lawhon School. He later moved with his family to Zephyrhills, Florida until his return back to Mississippi later in his teen years. Doug was a self employed flooring contractor installing flooring in many homes throughout North Mississippi. He loved sports especially Mississippi State Football. Doug married Mary Margaret Quinn Smith and they spent 31 wonderful years of marriage together. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and work in his vegetable garden. He was a man of faith and had a heart for the Lord. Doug was a member of South Green Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Smith of Plantersville; three children, Melissa Smith Harris (M.O. Harris, Jr.) of Verona, Marti Hodge of Plantersville, Mike Fair (Angel) of Mooreville; three sisters, Mae Demuse, Louise Maloof, Emily Lamons; two brothers, Kenneth Smith, Tommy Smith; four grandchildren, Rev. Blake McCain (Brittany) of Hattiesburg, Matthew Hodge of Saltillo, Megan Hodge of Tremont, Lisa Basham (Steven) of Starkville; four great-grandchildren, Avery-Kate McCain, Ann-Hayden McCain, Sadie Lynn Wilson and Olivia Basham.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Evelyn Pannell; two brothers, Charles Smith and James Smith.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the Jefferson Street Chapel with his grandson, Rev. Blake McCain officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Mike Fair, Jerry Hodge, J. D. Jones, Tim Long, David Rollins and M.O. Harris, Jr. .
