Dorothy Pennington Clay

Dorothy Sloan Pennington Clay, 89, of Tupelo, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House.

She was born in Amory on June 24, 1924, to Gainey and Dora Ridings Sloan. She grew up in a large family with nine brothers and sisters in and around the Carolina Community. She loved gardening and could make just about anything grow. She enjoyed crafts and was an amazing seamstress. She also loved to cook and enjoyed company.

A celebration of her life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues. A graveside will follow at Carolina Cemetery.

Survivors include children, David Pennington (Margie) of Saltillo, Dwight Pennington of Tupelo and Cathy Hughes of Horn Lake; seven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Una Newton of Amory.

She was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, James Robert Pennington; husband, Maurice Clay; sisters, Martha Grace, Afton Barrett, Grace DeVall and Ina Sloan; brothers, Johnny, Shirley, E.A. and Buford Sloan; son-in-law, Jerry Hughes.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and other family members.

Visitation will be 12-2 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the funeral home.
