Dorothy Curlin Barger

Tupelo - Dorothy Curlin Barger passed away Friday, July 3rd, after a long illness while a resident of the Memphis Jewish Home for three years. She had just celebrated her 92nd birthday the week before her death. A native Memphian born June 22, 1923, and later a member of the Woodlawn Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Memphis, she married Henry Owen Barger in July, 1949. They lived in Tupelo from 1959 till 1996 and were members of First United Methodist Church, where Dorothy served on the Administration Board, was a member of the United Methodist Women and initiated the Historical Room at that church. While living in Tupelo, she was also the first woman to serve on the Selective Service Board by Presidential appointment. A lady of exceptional talents, she owned Dorothy's Bridal Rentals and Catering, servicing numerous weddings and social events in the north Mississippi and Memphis areas. Avid genealogists, she and her husband spent their retirement years and numerous trips to Europe in research of their respective family heritages. They were members of Northeast Mississippi Historical and Genealogical Society. Dorothy held memberships in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mary Stewart Chapter of the DAR, the National and State Societies of the Dames of the Court of Honor, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Daughters of the American Colonists, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Henry and sister, Marion C. Cathey of Mexico Beach, FL. She is survived by her three children: Diana Barger Moore (William F., Jr.) of Holly Springs, MS; Henry Owen Barger, Jr. (Jean) of Fort Worth, TX; and David Neil Barger (Lilian) of Taos, NM; six grandchildren: William Moore III of Charlotte, NC; Dr. Ryves Moore (Mary Chris) of Memphis; Jennifer Barger Richburg (Tim) of Birmingham, AL; Stephanie Barger Harbich (Clay) of Houston, TX; Aaron Barger of Minneapolis, MN ; Alan Barger of Dallas, TX; and four great grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at Tupelo Memorial Park with Rev. Ed Marshal Temple officiating. All friends are invited to join the family at the services. Visitation will be 10 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo. Pallbearers will be William F. Moore III, Henry Owen Barger Jr., David Neil Barger, Dr. Ryves Moore, Tim Richburg and Benjamin Allen Moore. Honorary pallbearer will be William F.
