DONALD HAMILTON

Tupelo- Donald Hamilton, 75, died Sunday, September 27, 2009, at The North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness.. He was born May 10, 1934 on Isle of Man, off the west coast of England. In his teens, he was an avid swimmer, rugby player, and raced motorcycles. He played rugby until he moved to the U.S. in 1966. While in the Royal British Army paratroopers he was in the Army honor guard that lined the route during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. He moved to the US to manufacture ponchos for the Korean War. Later he manufactured women's wear in Alabama. From there he moved to California to manufacture men's sportwear for Hang Ten and Ocean Pacific (OP). While working for OP, he lived in Hong Kong, Panama and England. The last years of his career were spent n Guatamala, Jamaica, and Bangladesh, running factories for a Korean company.

For the past few years the highlight of his week has been a call to his daughters in England to hear about the grandchildrens swim meets and their music lessons. Don loved music and was learning to play blues on the piano before his stroke eight years ago. He was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Barbara Moreland Hamilton of Tupelo; two daughters, Stephanie Young (Jay) and Donna Cowan (Tim); four grandchildren, Taylor and Madison Young and Cameron and Hayden Cowan; his first wife, Murlis Hamilton, all of Colchester, England; his mother-in-law, Mildred Moreland, of Tupelo; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Davis (Buddy) of Tupelo and Marsha Cole (Ken) of Fair Hope, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

While no services will be held, a time of visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the funeral home.
