Oxford - Coyal Ray "Cooter" Russell, 81, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at the Oxford Veterans Home after an extended illness. A Pontotoc Co. native, he was born September 13, 1925 to the late Tom A. and Myrtis Raye Russell. He was a resident of Houlka and had worked as a farmer and a carpenter. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He enjoyed gardening,fishing, and being outdoors. He loved his family and was loved by them. He was a Baptist.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with and officiating. Burial will be in Black Zion Cemetery.
Survivors include four sons, Ray Russell and wife, Rita, of Pontotoc, Glen Russell and wife, Sandra, of Tupelo, Danny Russell and wife, Lynda, of Houlka, and Earnie Russell and wife, Jane, of Pontotoc; a sister, Ruby Young, of Pontotoc; a brother, Junior Russell of Pontotoc; three sisters-in-law, Marie Russell of Houlka, and Patsy Russell of Pontotoc, and Hazel Galloway and husband, Monroe, of Pontotoc; seven grandchildren, Mickie Lynn Searcy, Sheila Black, Christopher Russell and wife, Cindy, Dana Russell and wife, Candi, Michael Russell and wife, Meredith, Lee Russell, Dawn McCarty and husband, Todd; seven great-grandchildren, Grant and Mollie Searcy, Haley Black, Sheila and Katie Russell, Courtney and Mallori Russell and Four sons, Ray Russell and wife, Rita, Glen Russell and wife, Sandra, Danny Russell and wife, Lynda, and Earnie Russell and wife; a sister, Ruby Young; a brother, Junior Russell; three sisters-in-law, Marie Russell, Patsy Russell and Hazel Galloway and husband, Monroe; seven grandchildren, Mickie Lynn Searcy, Sheila Black, Christopher Russell and wife, Cindy,Dana Russell and wife, Candi, Michael Russell and wife, Meredith, Lee Russell, Dawn McCarty and husband, Todd; eight great-grandchildren, Grant and Mollie Searcy, Haley Black, Sheila and Katie Russell, Courtney and Mallori Russel and Brayden McMillen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and the mother of his children, Mattie Bernice Russell; his second wife, Annie Lou Russell; a daughter, Sheila Ann Russell; three brothers, Surgeon Russell, Erksell Russell, and Thomas Russell; two sisters, Vivian Elliott, and Flavous Young .
Pallbearers will be Dana Russell, Michael Russell, Chris Russell, Lee Russell, Claude Ransom, and C.J. Ransom.
Visitation will continue Thursday from 12 p.m. until service time
