Pontotoc County - Cortez Gentry, lovingly referred to as "Corky" and "Tez" by his family, 93, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Sanctuary Hospice House after a lengthy illness. He was born in Pontotoc County May 21, 1925, to George Washington and Ophelia Victoria "Queen" Sappington Gentry. On May 18, 1946, he married Annie Jean Clarady in Pontotoc County. Early in life, he served in the United States Army and the Army Reserve. Cortez worked as a mechanic at Dan Hester Auto and the City of Tupelo for a number of years. After his retirement, he became a full time black angus cattle and corn farmer and loved riding his 1966 Ford 601 Workmaster tractor. He enjoyed playing board games and card games with his family; especially Rummy and Dominoes with his wife.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Ware (Ray) of Thaxton and Kathy Whitt of Thaxton; one son, George Gentry of Tupelo; son-in-law, Bobby Holloway of Pontotoc; ten grandchildren, Twila Smith of Tupelo, Allison Rowan (Kevin) of New Albany, Valerie Holloway of Pontotoc, Angie Vinson (David) of Madison, Leigh Hickman of Tupelo, Teresa Crone (Neil) of Tupelo, Chassidy Leavell of Trussville, Alabama, Marie Fortenberry (Daniel) of Tupelo, Melodi Moak (Ricky) of Springhill, Tennessee and Russell Ware (Lynn) of Kansas City, Missouri; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clyde Gentry of Hernando; and sisters-in-law, Nell Gentry of Pontotoc and Joann Gentry of Pontotoc.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Queen Gentry; wife, Jean Gentry; one daughter, Barbara Holloway; one daughter-in-law, Catherine Gentry; one son-in-law, Kenneth Montgomery; two sisters, Annie Gentry and Berlene Galloway; and four brothers, Branty Gentry (Faye), Kavanaugh Gentry (Guvie), G.W. Gentry and Louis Gentry.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until service time Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Ray Ware officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Cemetery.
