Cora Elizabeth Peeler Lamond

Cora Elizabeth Peeler Lamond of Williamsburg, VA, formerly of Clifton, VA and Alexandria, VA passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 in Williamsburg, VA due to complications from a stroke. Cora was born in Shannon, Mississippi on April 7, 1927 to the late Alric Arnold and Mary Katherine Brandon Peeler. She was a direct descendant of Martha Washington (Curtis and Ball families). While spending her college summer working at the YMCA in Estes Park, Colorado, John, a young man from The Bronx, NY rescued Cora, a young lady from Holly Springs, Mississippi, from the back of a runaway horse. On June 5, 1949, Cora married John F. Lamond. Cora is also survived by her brother Sam Peeler and his wife Pattye Peeler; her children, Heather and her husband Charles Walker, Mary and her husband Dave Olivero, and John III and his wife Tina Lamond; her grandchildren Brandy and her husband Noah Spitzer, Jack and his wife Emily Walker, John IV, Sam and Natalie Lamond; and her great grandchildren Charlie, Joey, Ozzie and Sophia. Cora graduated from Holly Springs High School in 1944 and received her B.S. at Delta State 1948. In 1958, she earned an M.A. Ed. Admin. from Memphis State University, and in 1973 she earned an M.A. in Guidance from The College of William and Mary. Cora was a graduate of S.C.O.T.S. Masters of Scotland. Cora and John are members of The Burgess Society of Colonial Williamsburg and St. Andrews Society of Williamsburg. Cora was a former member of the Clifton Presbyterian Church and current member of Heritage Presbyterian Church in Alexandria. Cora was an officer in FEA while teaching in Fairfax County School System (Frost and Cooper Intermediate Schools); she was also a member of the International Air Transport Association, and the American Society of Travel Agents. Cora was a former member of the Capital Yacht Club, Clan Lamont Society of North America, Chantilly National Golf and Country Club. Cora was the creator and host of the television show "A Word to the Wives" on the Memphis, TN television station WKNO from 1958 - 1960. While hosting Cora was able to interview and befriend many local and national celebrities to include Elvis Presley. Her children were often regulars on Happy Hal and Romper Room while her show was being filmed. A home she designed and built in Memphis was featured in McCalls magazine in 1961. John's transfer to the Pentagon in 1963 resulted in a move to Clifton, VA where they lived from 1963 - 1989. They then moved to Alexandria, VA. Cora was an educator in Mississippi, Nebraska, Memphis, TN; and Fairfax County VA. She was a lecturer at American University regarding Comparative Education in China and Russia throughout the seventies and eighties. She was an international travel advisor with several agencies in Alexandria, VA. John and Cora retired to Williamsburg in 2000. Cora was able to explore over 200 countries, venture on every continent, and "dip her toe" in every ocean. Her favorite trips include the Orient Express throughout Europe, the Blue Train in Southern Africa, flying on the Concorde to England and returning on the Queen Mary 2, and sailing on tall ships throughout the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. Very generously, Cora shared her travels to Europe, United Kingdom, the Carribean, Bermuda, and Central America with her children and grandchildren. Her kindness and patience with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her amazing stories of adventures and fashion advice will be greatly missed by her family and friends throughout the world. Services will take place on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2:00 pm in the 1st Baptist Church of Shannon, Mississippi. Family will receive friends from 1:00 -2:00.
