Saltillo - Cleo Floyd Herring, 90, died Friday, December 5, 2008, at his residence after an extended illness. A Union County native, he was born August 20, 1918 to John and Lula Crumpton Herring. He married Mattie Lee Clayton in 1937 and worked as a farmer most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed playing dominos with friends in Saltillo. He was a member of Birmingham Ridge Baptist Church.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 8, 2008 at Cherry Creek Baptist Church in Pontotoc County with Rev. Bobby Holland and Rev. James Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Cherry Creek Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Joan Sneed and husband, Carl, of Amory, Dorene Maddox and husband, Henry of Oakland, TN, Brenda McCreight and husband, Sam, of Pontotoc, and Phyllis Potts and husband, Joe, of Saltillo; one sister, Helen Clifton of West Point; one brother, Austin Herring and wife, Birdie Mae, of Memphis, TN; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mottie Clayton Herring; a son, Cleo Dwight Herring; three brothers, Troy Herring, Buddy Herring, and J.L. Herring; four sisters, Katie Wilson, Opal Clayton, Flossie Rakestraw, and Alta Cobb; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Honorary Pallbearers will be his domino buddies.
Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and the body will lie in state 9:30 a.m. to service time Monday at the church.
