Christine Nanney

Tupelo - Christine Chris Taylor Nanney, 79, died Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at The Traceway Leeper Green House in Tupelo after an extended illness. A Lee County native and lifelong resident, she was born February 12, 1929 to Joseph Swep and Florence Ballard Taylor. She was a 1947 graduate of Mooreville High School where she lettered in basketball and was a member of the 1945-46 state championship team. She was the widow of Nolen Todd Nanney whom she married May 15, 1948. As a computer programer assistant for Central Service Association, she gave 44 years of service, retiring in 1997. She enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables. She was nominated for Lee County Volunteer of the Year in 2006. She was a longtime and faithful member of St. Mark United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Donny Riley and Rev. Glyn Wiygul officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include her son, Steve Nanney and wife, Patti, of Bellaire, Tex.; her twin sister and caregiver Lorene Carr of Sevierville, Tenn.; special niece, Jackie McDaniels of Belden; a lifelong friend and co-worker, Mary Nell Millwood of Tupelo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Nolen Todd Nanney who died January 11, 2007; four sisters, Genevie Guntharp, Clara Howell, Fess Hussey, and Gladys Cantrell; and four brothers, Pete, Tank, Joe, and Swep Taylor.

Pallbearers will be Tony Young, Joe Price Young, J.B. Nanney, Gary Nanney, Mike Bass, Randy Taylor, Bud Clement, and Edwin Brown.

Honorary Pallbearers will be George Lyons, Charles Elliff, Ben Simons, Homa Bailey, Delbert Turner, Jr., and David Bruce.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 153 Elvis Presley Drive, Tupelo MS 38804; the Lee County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 1800 West Main, Box 1, Tupelo, MS 38801; or a charity of the donor's choice.
