Chester Fitts

Oxford - Daniel Chester Fitts, 90, of Pontotoc died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Mississippi State Veterans Home after an extended illness. He was born March 2, 1918 to the late Daniel Webster and Mary Lee Breeden Fitts in Hardeman County, TN. He was a member of First Baptist Church Tupelo. He served in Company B, 96th Chemical Mortar Battalion in World War II and was stationed in England, Germany, France and Austria. After discharge from the military in 1945, he was employed in the carpentry shop at Natchez Trace Parkway in Tupelo. He worked for the Park Service until his retirement in October 1984 after more than 40 years of Federal Service. The Sign Shop, under the direction of Chester Fitts, made all of the signs and markers seen from one end of the Natchez Parkway to the other.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Joe Herndon and Rev. David Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include three nephews; Eugene Fitts and his wife Sandra of Corinth, Bill Wardlaw and wife Betty of Baton Rouge LA. and Larry Whaley of Rowlette, TX; one niece Jane York and husband Dan of Shannon.; a host of great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 58 years, Doris Brandon, and his second wife Ilene Thomas Kennedy, and six sisters and one brother.

Pallbearers will be Britt Fitts, Stephen King, Tom Sewell, Keith Thomas, Dan York and Larry Stewart.

Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday until service time at the funeral home.
