Charles Lynon Thorn

Evergreen " Charles Lynon Thorn, 91, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after a brief illness. A native of the Mt. Pleasant Community, he was born August 3, 1917, to Charlie Walker and Minnie Cole Thorn. He attended school in the Fairview Community but lived over 60 years in the Evergreen Community. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Company H of the 155th Infantry, 31st Dixie Division, in the South Pacific. He achieved the rank of Corporal and received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, one Bronze Arrowhead and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was a farmer most of his life, but had also worked ten years for Arvin Industries. He was the widower of Juanita Holley Thorn whom he married November 21, 1942. He was a longtime member of Evergreen Baptist Church.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. Bobby Robbins officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Liberty Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Christian and husband, Bill, of Snellville, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Rosie Thorn of Nettleton and Martha Holley of Holly Springs; his brother-in-law, Rev. Marion Holley and wife, Elizabeth, of Shannon; two grandchildren, Brad Christian and wife, Abby, of Moyock, N.C.; and Heather Dodd and husband, Jason, of Cumming, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Juanita Thorn who died March 10, 1995; his sister, Laverne Collier and husband, Thomas; and his brother, Ted Thorn.

Pallbearers will be Joe Hester, Butch Collier, Mike Thorne, DeWayne Thorn, Jim Mullins, and Charles Mullins. Honorary Pallbearer will be Dale Cox.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and will continue Saturday from noon until service time at the funeral home.
