Tupelo - Charles Henry Gibbs, 79, died Monday, May 1, 2006, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after a brief illness. A Brownsville, Tenn. native, he was born October 20, 1926 to the late Henry Arthur and Maggie May Maxwell Gibbs. A graduate of Haywood County High School, he then attended Memphis State University where he played football. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II. He was retired from South Central Bell with over 30 years of service. He will be remembered for driving the athletic bus for Tupelo High School for over 10 years. He also enjoyed building the sets for Tupelo High School Theater and Tupelo Community Theater. He was a past president and long time treasurer of the Tupelo Civitan Luncheon Club and served as governor of the Mississippi North Civitan. He was also a York Rite Mason and was very active while living in Paris, Tenn. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church and an avid fan of the University of Tennessee. He was married to Joan Gibbs who preceded him in death August 6, 1996.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.

Survivors include one daughter, Debby Gibbs of Tupelo; two nephews, Jimmy McNatt of Memphis and Don McNatt of Nashville; his special friends, Sue Shaw-Smith and Heidi Smith; his wifes brothers and sister, nieces and nephews of Jackson, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50 years, Joan Gibbs; one sister, Margaret McNatt.

Pallbearers will be Former THS Coaches, James Sloan, Larry Harmon, Phil Ferguson, Bob Monroe, Lee Stratton, Ken Smith, Mickey Linder, Ricky Black.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Nanci Gray; members of the Tupelo Luncheon Civitan Club; and the Bellsouth Pioneers.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2006.
