Charles Fitzner, Jr., 87, died Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at the hospice unit of North Mississippi Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Buffalo, New York July 16, 1930, to Charles Fitzner, Sr. and Florence Fisher Fitzner. Over the years, he had lived a number of places throughout the country and had owned a number of movie theaters but he found his home at Lake Piomingo. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Chuck retired from General Motors where he had worked as a supervisor over the guidance system for NASA's Apollo Moon Landing Program. He enjoyed spending time on the water on his pontoon boat at Lake Piomingo and found great joy in spending time with his family. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Dorsey.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Carol Fitzner of Lake Piomingo; one daughter, Jayne De La Rosa and her husband, Charles of Milwaukee, Wisconsin ; one son, Wayne Fitzner and his wife, Sue of Lake Piomingo; step-daughters, Cindy Tomlin and her husband, Bill of Fulton and Jenny Grimes and her husband, Greg of Starkville; two step-sons, Jason Wood and his wife Melanie of Fulton and Chris Wood and his wife, Connie of Fulton; three grandchildren, Alison Baker and her husband, Dan, Christen Adrihan and her husband, David, and Mark Fitzner; ten step-grandchildren, Deaven Tomlin, Harley Tomlin and his fiance, Lindsay Dunaway, Isaac Tomlin, Chase Rogers and wife, Allie, Payton Rogers, Caleb Wood, Makenna Wood, Lacey Maxey and her husband, Bobby, Drew Wood and his wife, Frannie and James Wood; six great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly "Bev" Fitzner; his parents; and his sister.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2018, at W. E. Pegues, Tupelo.
Services with military honors will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Terry Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Sandy Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his step-grandsons.
