Catherine Hunter Sadler, born September 13, 1920, in Tupelo, MS, died January 27, 2009, in Nashville, TN. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Robert Emmett Sadler, her parents, John P. Hunter, Sr. and Alice Hunter Patterson, and a brother, John P. Hunter, Jr. Survivors include her children, Robert Sadler, Jr. and wife, Robin, of Buffalo, NY, son Michael Sadler of Nashville, daughter Mary Hunter Sadler Coltharp of Nashville; sister Alice (Tommy) Patterson of Decatur, GA; brother Fraser Hunter of Southern Pines, NC; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Sadler (Kevin) Cryan, Katie Sadler, Trelsie Sadler, Mary Catherine Coltharp (Ben) Sutherland, William Coltharp, Michael Coltharp; one great grandchild, Isabelle Cryan; four nieces and three nephews.
Mrs. Sadler was a product of the Tupelo public school system, graduating from Tupelo High School in 1938, and then graduating from the Mississippi State College for Women in 1942 (now Mississippi University for Women). While in MSCW she was a member of the Black List, and selected for Whos Who in American Colleges and Universities. She lived most of her life in Tupelo where she was active in church and civic organizations. She was the first PTA president at Joyner Elementary School, and was a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a Ruling Elder, served as President of the Women of the Church, and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Service League, which later became the Tupelo Junior Auxiliary, the Tupelo Garden Club, the Forthian Club, and a volunteer in various community organizations before moving to Nashville in 2002 to be with her family. In Nashville, she was a member of First Presbyterian church, Belle Meade Country Club and the Centennial Club.
Her son, Michael, states: Mrs. Sadler, my mother, had an infectious love for children, a keen eye for the beauty of nature, and an uncompromising devotion to her family and her faith.
The Nashville memorial service, conducted by Sandra Randleman, will be at First Presbyterian Church, Stanford Chapel, 4815 Franklin Pike, on January 30 at 11 a.m. There will be visitation with the family an hour before the service.
The funeral service in Tupelo will be at First Presbyterian Church, 400 West Jefferson Street, on January 31 at 11:30 a.m. The service will be conducted by Joel and Jill Tolbert, niece and nephew of the deceased. There will be visitation with the family an hour before the service. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Tupelo, MS.
Pallbearers are Ernest Joyner, Richard McCarty, Billy Crews, Jack Reed, Jr., Dr. Fulton Thompson, Jr., Chauncey Godwin, Jr., Guy Mitchell III, Mike Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the First Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN, or Tupelo, MS, the Mississippi University for Women, or the charity of your choice.
