Tupelo—Catherine Marie McGregor Mathis passed away Friday, December 16, 2022 at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was 87 years old. Born September 14, 1935 in Oxford, she was the daughter of Fred Evans McGregor and Vivian Low McGregor. In 1950 she married the love of her life, John T. Mathis and they enjoyed 64 wonderful years together. Catherine’s life was spent serving others. She was a homemaker who took great care in tending to the needs of her husband and children. Much like the woman described in Proverbs 31, Catherine stayed busy sharing all she could with those around her. Her faith in God carried her through many difficult days. She was a longtime member of Harrisburg Baptist Church and was currently a member of King’s Gate Church. Always sharing her faith with others, she was a founding member of the Gideons’ Women’s Auxiliary in Tupelo. She also had a jail ministry. Catherine had a true servant’s heart and giving spirit.
She leaves behind her four children, Christi Senter (Don) of Tupelo, John Mathis III (Keiko) of Batesville, Art Mathis of Tupelo, and Greg Mathis (Stefanie) of Atlanta, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Kathryn Robinson, Meghan Higginbotham (Kyle), Hilary Vrocher (Diamond), Anne Marie Bailey, Nick Mathis (Roderica), Meg Boone (Lee), Cherry Mathis, and Jessica Mathis; three step-grandchildren, Ashley Lambert, Skyler and Jackson Dossey; and nine great-grandchildren, Bailey Robinson, Max and Molly Vrocher, Bella Lee, Harper and Lily Higginbotham, Miya and Maddy Mathis, and Ellie Boone.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Brenda Bailey; five siblings, James McGregor, Lula Stribling, Aubrey McGregor, Audrey McGregor and her twin, Katy Murchison.
Graveside services celebrating Catherine’s memory will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tupelo Memorial Park. Pegues Funeral Directors has been entrusted with arrangements.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Magnolia Manor for the loving care given to Catherine for the past eight years.
