TupeloCarolyn Newell Schreiter, 58, died Sunday, August 24, 2008, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. She was born January 8, 1950, to Malone and Jacquilla Newell of Mantachie. She graduated from Mantachie High School, Itawamba Junior College and Mississippi State University. She taught English for a short while before beginning her family. She enjoyed reading, especially theology, teaching, cooking playing the piano, and spending as much time as possible with her children and extended family members. She was a member of Covenant Life PCA of Saltillo, where she taught the Womens Wednesday Night Bible Study for many years and where she and her late husband had been longtime teachers of the High School Sunday School Class.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors with Pastors Fred Showers and Tim Fortner officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include two sons, Alex and Ben Smith of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Callie Smith of Starkville and Tupelo; her parents, Malone and Jacquilla Newell of Mantachie; two sisters, Kathy Allison and husband, Glen, and Julie Homan, all of Tupelo; a brother, Darrell Newell and wife, Laura, of Alabaster, Ala.; a step-daughter, Michelle McCaleb and husband, Grant, of Hoover, Ala.; her father-in-law, Otto Schreiter of Duarte, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Sandy Hancock and husband, Dave, of Duarte, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and the father of her children, Fred C. Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Spencer L. Schreiter on June 7, 2003; a sister, Jeannie Gail Newell; a step-son, Michael P. Schreiter; and her mother-in-law, Fern Schreiter.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Foster, Tom Ellis, Jack Johnson, Kevin Moore, R.D. Potts, Steve Yeoman and Luke Homan.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
