Carol Ruth Horton passed away Saturday, April 5, 2025 at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was 75 years old. Born in Tupelo on August 11, 1949, she was the daughter of Benjamin Edward Summers and Mary Lou Gunter Summers. Carol was a graduate of Mooreville High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in education at Mississippi State University. She taught ninth grade social studies for several years at Mooreville. She later began her second career at the Lee County Clerk’s Office and served 27 years as office manager until her retirement. Carol was a dedicated member of Allen’s Chapel Methodist Church where she offered her talents as pianist for many years. On September 15, 1972, she married Gerald Horton and they enjoyed 62 happy years together. Carol was an avid reader, finding a great deal of comfort and relaxation through her books; however, her greatest joy came from spending each cherished moment with her grandbabies.
Carol leaves behind her husband, Gerald D. Horton Sr.; two children, Gerald David Horton Jr. (Star) of Wheeler and Mary Christine “Chrissi” Horton of Mooreville; two grandchildren, Isabella Marie and Ellalee Ruth; three sisters, Meredith Dillard, Connie Collins (Nate), and Donna Knight; and a host of nieces and nephews.
