CARMEN MCCULLEY

Tupelo - CARMEN TURNER MCCULLEY, 93, died Saturday, July 28, 2007, at her residence in Tupelo after an extended illness. A Saltillo native, she was born September 22, 1913 to the late Arthur David and Martha Pearl Lindsay Turner. A portion of her childhood was spent in Corinth before returning to Lee County where she graduated in 1932 from Saltillo High School. She then went on to graduate from Sunflower Junior College and later attended the University of Mississippi. She was married April 22, 1946 to Jerry T. McCulley who preceded her in death, September 16, 1991. Earlier in her career, she taught in the Auburn School for 16 years. She worked over 25 years as a bookkeeper with the Carnation Milk Plant in Tupelo. In 1969, she begin work as the financial secretary at Calvary Baptist Church where she worked until she retired in the early 1980s. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and had a passion for reading. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was active in the WMU and a longtime worker in the church nursery.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2007 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Hurt and Rev. Mike Burczynski officiating. Burial will be in Saltillo Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Hernandez and husband, Roberto, of Madison, Alabama, and Mary Carmen Brooks and husband, Jimmy, of Columbus, Ga.; one sister, Bertie Turner of Tupelo; two brothers, James D. Turner of Tupelo, and Bill Turner of Kingsport, Tennessee; two grandsons, Robert Hernandez of Huntsville, Alabama, and Trey Brooks of Columbus, Georgia; one granddaughter, Suzanna Hernandez and husband, Jonathan Dowd, of Ashville, North Carolina; 22 nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; two special caregivers, Christa and Carolyn; and a beloved friend and neighbor of over 50 years, Wilodine Nelms.

Pallbearers will be David Turner, Fred Strange, Hank Stanford, Owen Martin, Roberto Hernandez, Robert Hernandez, Jimmy Brooks, and Trey Brooks

Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2007.
