Carlos Pettigrew

Cayson - Carlos Pettigrew, 94, died Friday, August 7, 2009, at his residence in the Cayson Community. A native and life-long resident of Tupelo, he was born July 3, 1915, to John and Bessie Smith Pettigrew. On April 26, 1936, he married Velera Mae Sis Roebuck and they recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II stationed in the Philippines in the mail department. He returned after his service and continued as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.

He was very involved in the community and until moving to Monroe County had been a long-time member of the Tupelo Luncheon Club. He was an ordained deacon of First Baptist Church in Tupelo. He was a long-time member of the Nettleton Fox Hunting and Fishing Club, serving on its board of directors in the early 80s and was affectionately known as Greenhouse by all those in the club who knew him. His was well-known for his hobby of raising and selling tomato plants and tomatoes and his Pettigrews Tomatoes were sold throughout North Mississippi.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2009 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Dr. Gayle Alexander officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Conwill Cemetery in Monroe County.

Survivors include his wife, Velera Mae Sis Roebuck Pettigrew; one daughter, Joan Taylor Walters (James); one grandson, Russell Taylor (Karen); three great grandchildren, John Austin Taylor, Peyton Taylor and Ella Kate Taylor, all of the Cayson Community.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; Newell Pettigrew and Lucille Clayton and a son-in-law, William Owen Taylor.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Floyd, Frankie Blackman, Stanley Hurt, James Cresap, Lewis Frazier and Buster Davis.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Nettleton Fox Hunting and Fishing Club.
