Dr. C. PRICE GRISSOM
Tupelo - Dr. Charley Price Grissom, 79, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at his home. He was born August 14, 1927, in Itawamba County, Mississippi to the late Charley Jackson Grissom and Vercie Price Grissom.
He graduated Itawamba Agricultural High School and served in the Army in World War II. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1950, with a Bachelor of Science and from Auburn University in 1957, with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Shortly after graduating from MSU, he taught physics for a semester at Starville High School. He also taught science, math, and English at Mantachie High School for three years and was the coach of the undefeated eighth grade boys basketball team.
After several years in private practice, he began work with the USDA, as a Veterinary Medical Officer and retired after 39 years. During his work with the USDA, he served as the USDA Expert in Post Mortem for the Southeast, on the national panel reviewing plant processes and setting new standards for the meat packing industry as well as creating training programs and materials for the USDA Training Center in Denton, Texas. He was honored in Washington, D.C. with a Merit Award for outstanding service.
He had a great love for growing roses and was honored to be elected as the first president of the Northeast Mississippi Rose Society. It was a special honor to have the Dr. Price Grissom Award given in his honor at the Rose Show. He also greatly enjoyed classical music and operawhich brought tears to his eyes from their beauty. He used to say that one of the nice things about being an old man was that you could get by with crying at pretty music and doting on roses. He was a kind and gentle soul with a lively sense of humor.
He was a lifelong Methodist and member of the First United Methodist Church of Tupelo.
He was devoted to his family: his beloved wife of 56 years, married July 8, 1950, Imogene, whom he still called sweetheart; his daughters, Melinda Kruyer of Cincinnati, Lisa Lichtfuss (John) of Tupelo, Jan Hernandez of Atlanta, and Angela Forst (Todd) also of Atlanta; his grandchildren, Matt Kruyer, Anna Kruyer, Taylor Forst, Tanner Forst, Kent Hernandez; his sisters, Johnnie Grisson, Ineta Whitaker and Estel Whitaker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Verci Grissom, a twin brother, Charley Trice, and his sisters, Mable Grissom and Inez Houston.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mantachie United Methodist Church with Rev. Ronnie Goodwin officiating. Visitation will be 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Matt Kruyer, Anna Kruyer, Taylor Forst, Todd Forst, John Lichtfuss, Steve Bramlett, and Steve Whitaker
Honorary pallbearers will be Tanner Forst, Kent Hernandez, and Lane Whitaker.
