C B. Boland

Tupelo - C. B. Boland, 90, died Friday, February 5, 2010, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. A Chickasaw County native, he was born January 9, 1920 to Charlie Bethel and Bessie Lee Wilder Boland. He was a retired Cheif Commissaryman from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service, where he was in combat during both World War II, and the Korean Conflict. In World War II, he served from May of 1942 to December of 1943 aboard the Battle Ship USS Massachusetts, known as "Big Mamie" to her crewmembers. And from May 1944 to July 1946 he served aboard the USS A.B. SD-4 (an advanced based sectional dry-dock). He also served aboard several other service vessels during his Naval career, including the USS Brownson, USS Daniel A. Joy, USS Farmington, and the USS Ault. After the war, while serving on the USS Ault, he circumnavigated the globe on a goodwill peace mission. At the conclusion of his military career he worked a number of years with the bureau of prisons. He later managed the cafeteria of the Tupelo Campus of Itawamba Junior College, and was a chef with Vernon's Steakhouse. He was married to Margaret K. Peggy Boland who preceded him in death July 24, 2004. He was a long time member of the Tupelo Luncheon Civitan Club. For a number of years he volunteered in food preparation for Meals-on-Wheels. He enjoyed playing and coaching shuffleboard and winning at dominoes. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues with Rev. David Langerfeld and Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. A eulogy will be given by his brother Wiley Boland. Burial with full military honors will be in Zion Cemetery.

Survivors include one sister, Callie B. Young of Pontotoc; one brother, Wiley N. Boland and his wife, Juanita of the Zion Community; and a number of neices and nephews and great neices and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters, Elva McCleskey, and Erin Ray; three brothers, Noel Boland, Rev. Leroy Boland, and Cecil Boland.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Johnson, Randy Young, Ronny Young, Jay Young, Nathan Young, and Nicholas Young.

Visitation will be 4:30 to 7:30 Monday, February 8, 2010 at the funeral home.
