C.W. "Billy" Shumpert
RICHMOND - Charles William "Billy" Shumpert, 80, joined his family and friends in heaven with Jesus Friday evening, May 11, 2007.
A lifelong resident of the Richmond Community, he was born to Mr. Mark and Mrs. Mable Shumpert on May 27, 1926. As a member of the United States Navy, he sailed on the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. Charles R. Ware during World War II from 1941 to 1943. He married Thelma Riley on June 27, 1947.
A farmer most of his life, he was the fourth generation to farm his family's land in Richmond. After years of farming alongside his two sons, he passed the family tradition on to them in 1988 on his 62nd birthday.
A faithful member of Richmond Baptist Church, he served many dedicated years as Sunday School Director and deacon. He counted all those in his church family as his own. Fishing, gardening and his carwash at Richmond were among his favorite hobbies, but he found his greatest joy and blessing in the times he spent with his family. A kind word for all he knew and met, he shared a precious bond with his daughter, Melissa, and his granddaughter, Molly. Better known as "Boppy" by those he loved most, he will forever be remembered in Richmond for his humble spirit, his kind soul and his generous heart.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues of Tupelo with Dr. Clay Anthony, Dr. Marvin Murphy and Dr. Sean Tutor officiating. Burial will be in the Dorsey Memorial Cemetery.
