BILLY WAYNE MAHARREY Tupelo - Billy Wayne Maharrey, 83, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born April 21, 1931, to Robert Thomas and Bertha Dallas Maharrey. Billy was a survivor of childhood Polio. He attended school in Okolona and Shannon. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp having served with the 3rd Division from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War and then served with the Mississippi National Guard. In 1954, he met the love of his life Martha "Rooney" Anderson and they married on September 28, 1956 at the Bissell Baptist Church. Billy Wayne loved scouting. He first served with Troop 3 at Bissell. Later he served as Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 85 for many years. As a leader, he attended Woodbadge training SE381. He was a Vigil member of Chicksa 202 Lodge of the Order of the Arrow. Billy was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor for an adult volunteer, for his service to the Yocona Area Council. For many years he worked at Pennsylvania Tire & Rubber Company until its closure in the 1970's. Billy then worked for Hancock Fabrics and retired in 1996. Billy traveled extensively after retirement, enjoyed camping, classic cars, participated in the Tupelo Blue Suede Cruise and Cruising the Coast. He was a member of the Marine Corp League, attended the Wednesday Morning Veteran's meeting at the American Legion. Billy was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church where he participated in Merry Makers and the Heritage Choir. He enjoyed traveling with the Senior Adults and went on construction mission trips. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015 at Harrisburg Baptist Church with Rev. David Smith and Rev. Milton Whatley officiating. A private family graveside will follow at Lee Memorial Park. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include three children, Michael Maharrey, Phyllis Dye and Mark Maharrey and wife Dana; twelve grandchildren, Zeb Maharrey, Micah Monaghan and wife Courtney, Ian Nichols and husband Jeremiah, Hannah Maharrey, Jade Maharrey and husband Cody Jordan, Marley Maharrey, Patrick Maharrey, Matthew Maharrey and Carter Maharrey; three great-grandchildren, Grace, Mae and Ivy Monaghan; brother, Robert D. Maharrey and wife Jeanette, sister-in-law Mary Maharrey; brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Bill and Sue Anderson; and a host of nieces and nephews he loved very much. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Melvin Maharrey; son-in-law, Ken Dye. Pallbearers will be Zeb Maharrey, Micah Monaghan, Jeremiah Nichols, Cody Jordon, Matthew Maharrey and Carter Maharrey. Honorary pallbearers will be the Marine Corp. League, Andrew F. Lawhon Detachment; Hardee Boys; Wilemon-Scott Sunday School Class; Past & Present members of Troop 85. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Harrisburg Baptist Church.
