Betty Sue (Payne) Shumpert
Tupelo--Betty Sue Shumpert, aged 98, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024 at Traceway Retirement Community in Tupelo, Mississippi. Betty Sue was born on March 27, 1926 in Tupelo and spent the majority of her later life in West Point. Betty Sue was a graduate of Mooreville High School where she played on the 1940 basketball team that won the Mississippi state championship. Betty Sue was a member of the First United Methodist Church in West Point for 54 years. She was a dedicated server for her church and finally gave up her Meals on Wheels duty at age 93. Betty Sue worked as credit manager at Sears in Jackson, Tennessee and as accounts payable at Blazon Flexible Flyer in West Point.
She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Smith (Glenn) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, sons Barry Shumpert (Pete) of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Steve Shumpert (Susan) of Georgetown, Texas; grandchildren, Andrea Dukes of Forest, Virginia, Clay Meals of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Stephanie Massey of Georgetown, Texas and Sean Shumpert of Houston, Texas. She also has six great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Jimmie Sheffield of Mantachie; nieces, Jan Stembridge and Linda Jones; nephews, Perry Sheffield, David Payne, and Pete McKinney; and honorary nephew Bud Coley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, LB (Byron) and Lorine Payne; her beloved husband, Clifford Lois Shumpert; sister, Louise Monaghan; and brother, Cecil Payne.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2024 at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues Funeral Directors. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Monday at Pegues, Tupelo. Burial will follow at Gilvo Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Sean Shumpert, Allen Dukes, Glenn Smith, and Carter Dukes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial be made to First Methodist Church of West Point, 612 East Broad Street, West Point MS 39773; or the Sally Kate Winters Children’s Home, 801 N. Division St., West Point MS 39773.
